My personal training continues a 36-year teaching lineage. This is tradition, not a quick trend. Finding the correct program always starts by matching your age, personal goals, and experience level to a class truly built for those things. We do not offer generic class schedules. Below, you will find the program that meets you where you are on your journey.

What's Covered on This Page
Kids Martial Arts Builds Confidence in El Cajon
After school, your child needs real structure, not just a place to run wild. Our Kids Martial Arts program is built for an important time in childhood, typically ages 6 to 12. During these years, focus, coordination, and respect for others take root. We use age-appropriate drills and even a few games. Every student moves through our proven 4-step training method (Assess, Build, Challenge, Grow) at their own speed. This makes a real difference. A shy child should never feel pushed, and one who is ready should not be held back. This method builds lasting confidence.
This class is a popular first step for many families. It provides a good balance. Kids are old enough to learn real technique, but still young enough to thrive with engaging structure. Families in Fletcher Hills, for example, often choose our after-school time slot. We are close to the Academy's Fletcher Pkwy location, making pickup easy for busy parents.
What if your child is younger? Our Kosho Cubs (Preschool Martial Arts) serves that group. Those lessons are shorter and more play-based. If your child has grown past this stage, Tigers (Preteen Martial Arts) is the next step. Then they move into our Dragons program.

Adult Martial Arts Fits Any Schedule and Fitness Level
Perhaps you have trained before. Or you are looking to get back into a fitness routine, something more meaningful than a basic gym membership. Our Adult Martial Arts program is the ongoing path for exactly that. These classes blend real conditioning, strong technique work, and focused sparring drills. Every adult student follows our proven 4-step training method (Assess, Build, Challenge, Grow), as with all our programs. This is authentic, practical training. It is not a routine you will get bored with in a few months; it is an ongoing journey of personal growth.
This class welcomes adults across a range of fitness levels. We adjust instruction to meet you right where you are starting. Progress is measured in real skill, not just by how many times you show up. You will feel a sense of accomplishment with each new technique learned.
If you have never trained before, jumping into an adult class can feel challenging. Our Beginner Martial Arts for Adults program is designed as your starting point. Adult Martial Arts is where you continue once the basics are solid. You will continue with structured, ongoing progress. There is a strong community here.

Kajukenbo Martial Arts Training Teaches Practical Self-Defense
What happens when striking, grappling, and even weapon defense all come together in one system? That is Kajukenbo. It is a hybrid combat style, built for real-world self-defense. We do not focus on sport rules or arbitrary point-based scoring here. Students learn to move between different ranges, striking distance, the clinch, the ground, instead of just sticking to one. This creates a more versatile protector, a capable individual.
Kajukenbo is one of two core styles we teach at James Martial Arts Academy. It comes with a documented teaching lineage (mine, in fact, continues a 36-year tradition), tracing back through decades of authentic instruction. This lineage carries real weight. It is the core difference between a class pieced together from borrowed techniques and one built on a tested, authentic curriculum, passed down through genuine training relationships. Many people overlook this point when picking a school for themselves or their children.
Kajukenbo is about practical, hybrid combat. Kosho-Ryu, which we also teach, takes a more traditional route. It focuses on kata and deep lineage. Both are worth understanding. We want you to choose what suits your goals. We offer programs that allow for different training preferences.

Kosho-Ryu Martial Arts Training Builds Traditional Discipline
Some students seek more than just combat technique. They want form, philosophy, and a direct link back to the origins of the art. Kosho-Ryu Kenpo provides exactly that. It is a traditional, lineage-based style. We build the training around kata, honing technique, and a discipline that extends into your daily life, not just the training floor. It is about character before belts, a deep commitment to personal growth. This art teaches respect, building a strong sense of self-awareness and integrity.
We teach Kosho-Ryu alongside Kajukenbo as the Academy's second core curriculum. Few schools here in El Cajon offer both a hybrid combat system and a traditional lineage style under one roof. Our students benefit from understanding both, even if they decide to focus on one. They gain a broader perspective, a deeper understanding of real martial arts, regardless of their chosen path.
Where Kajukenbo focuses on hybrid and practical combat application, Kosho-Ryu centers on traditional technique and the deep discipline that comes from studying a style passed down with intention. If you are drawn to structure, patience, and precise technique over pure speed and hybrid tactics, this is where your journey begins. It is a path to mastery.

Women's Self-Defense Focuses on Real-World Safety Skills
Not every woman wants to commit to a long-term belt-rank journey. Many women seek practical safety skills, learned quickly and applied to real-world situations. Our Women's Self-Defense program delivers this. Training covers awareness, escape techniques, and fundamental strikes in a short, focused format. There is no long-term commitment required; you walk away with confidence and capability. We focus on immediate, usable skills for everyday safety.
There is a common misunderstanding. Some people think self-defense training and martial arts training are the same thing. They are not. Self-defense is a focused skillset, directly aimed at real-world safety. Our Adult Martial Arts, by contrast, is the full, ongoing training path with belt progression and deeper technique over time. Both are valuable, serving different immediate goals. Both build capable people.
This class works well as a standalone option for immediate skills. It can also be a starting point before you decide to move into ongoing training. Confidence matters most. Knowing what to do if a real situation ever puts you at risk, and practicing that response until it becomes second nature, empowers you to act decisively.

Beginner Martial Arts for Adults Starts Without Experience
"Am I too old to start?" We hear that question constantly. The answer is no. Our Beginner Martial Arts for Adults program addresses this concern. Classes start at a gentler pace. Instruction is tailored to your starting point, not just lumping first-timers with students who have trained for years. This is how we build strong foundations.
- We break down techniques step by step. We never assume you have prior experience.
- We adjust pacing to your fitness level. It is not a rigid class average.
- Instruction builds core fundamentals. Then we add intensity.
- A path leads into our ongoing Adult Martial Arts training.
Once the basics are solid, most students progress into our Adult Martial Arts program, the ongoing path for those with a foundation. This class serves as the on-ramp for people starting from zero, not for those already comfortable on the mat. We make sure you feel ready. It is all part of your journey to mastery.

Teen Martial Arts Builds Independence and Conditioning
Teenagers need something distinct and more challenging than a Kids program can offer. Our Dragons (Teen Martial Arts) program, for students roughly ages 13 to 17, focuses on stronger conditioning, realistic self-defense scenarios, and more independent decision-making. This is not a watered-down adult class. It is certainly not a stretched-out Kids program either; it is built for this age group. They are ready for real challenge, ready to become protectors of themselves and their community.
Several students come to us from the Granite Hills area. Especially after school lets out at Granite Hills High School, they use this class as their after-school training block. The conditioning is genuine. The self-defense scenarios mirror real situations teens might face, not just drills for a belt test. It prepares them for the world outside the Academy.
Tigers (Preteen Martial Arts) is the bridge program that comes before this stage. Teen Martial Arts then adds more autonomy and physical demand. It matches where students are developmentally at this age. It helps them build a strong identity, becoming protectors. They gain lasting confidence.

Preteen Martial Arts Bridges Kids and Teen Training
What happens when a student outgrows Kids Martial Arts but is not quite ready for teen-level intensity? Our Tigers (Preteen Martial Arts) program provides that bridge. Built for students roughly ages 10 to 13, this class moves towards more independence and sharper technique. It keeps the structure familiar from our younger Leopards (Kids Martial Arts) programs, but asks more of them. They rise to the challenge, demonstrating growing capability.
Families in Bostonia often find their kids naturally move into this program as they age out of elementary-level classes. It is a clear next step, not a jarring jump to something unfamiliar. Parents also see a real difference at home, a shift in maturity that builds respect for themselves and others.
This program directly bridges Kids Martial Arts and Teen Martial Arts. It matches the attention span and skill level for students between the two age groups. Students gain more responsibility here, leading warm-ups, helping newer students, fine-tuning their technique, without the full physical intensity of the Teen program just yet. They become leaders, not just followers, building serious character and self-reliance.

Preschool Martial Arts Introduces Focus and Motor Skills
A child's first structured activity should be short, playful, and low-pressure. This is the idea behind our Kosho Cubs (Preschool Martial Arts), built for children roughly ages 3 to 5. Lessons are shorter than our other classes and built around play, not drilling technique for its own sake. It builds focus, one fun step at a time. It nurtures early development through engaging activities.
The goal at this age is not advanced martial arts skill. It is listening, balance, and fundamental motor coordination. We teach this in a way that holds a young child's attention without overwhelming them. Parents often tell us the biggest early win is simple: their child follows instructions better, both at home and in class. This marks a real shift, a transformation in their ability. They gain confidence in their capabilities.
Kosho Cubs uses shorter, play-based lessons designed for this age group. Kids Martial Arts, by contrast, uses longer and more structured class formats once children are ready for that bigger step up in their journey. This allows for a smooth progression. Our family atmosphere helps children thrive and grow.
