Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve

Within San Diego’s city limits, Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve remains one of the wildest stretches of land along our Southern California coast. Thanks to the hard work and vision of those who lived in the area, 1,500 acres remain as they were before San Diego was built. This includes the maritime chaparral and the rare Torrey Pine, miles of unspoiled beaches, and a lagoon essential for migrating seabirds. It is easy to imagine how California looked to Spanish explorers and early settlers.

Enjoy a relaxing time in the Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve. Tourists from all around the globe visit Torrey Pines. Residents also visit the area daily to enjoy the beautiful views, walk peaceful trails, and exercise in a clean, serene environment.

It would help if you remembered that a reserve does not constitute a park. A natural reserve is an area that is designated as important. It is usually home to endangered plants, animals, habitats, or unique geological formations. A reserve is an area designated for conservation. It carries restrictions that are not available in parks. Only 14 of the 279 California State Park System units have reserve status. Torrey Pines is among them.
